ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Rookie quarterback Drake Maye announced his arrival on the NFL stage Sunday night, leading the New England Patriots to a stunning 23–20 upset over the Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium. In a game filled with emotional storylines, former Bills star Stefon Diggs shone in his return to western New York, while Maye showcased poise and playmaking ability well beyond his years.
Starting his first prime-time NFL game, Drake Maye delivered a signature victory that could define his early career. The 23-year-old completed 22 of 30 passes for 273 yards, capping his night with a last-minute drive that ended in Andy Borregales’ 52-yard field goal with just 15 seconds left.
The decisive march began with a miraculous play — Maye, being dragged down by defensive lineman DaQuan Jones, somehow found Diggs for a 12-yard completion. That clutch throw set the tone for a drive that silenced the Buffalo crowd and ended the Bills’ 14-game home winning streak.
First-year Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel praised both Maye and Diggs after the game.
“I’m proud of both of them,” Vrabel said. “It was emotional for Stef coming back here, and Drake just showed incredible toughness and leadership. He’s growing every week.”
For Stefon Diggs, the matchup was personal. After four memorable seasons in Buffalo (2020–2023), where he helped the team win four consecutive AFC East titles, Diggs returned as a Patriot — and made sure Bills fans remembered him.
He hauled in 10 catches for 146 yards, becoming the first Patriots receiver since Julian Edelman (2019) to record back-to-back 100-yard games in a single season.
“It was lit. Electrifying,” Diggs said about the atmosphere. “When it gets loud, it kind of gets quiet for me. They love you one day, they hate you the next — but I respect it. I spent a lot of time here. I guess I miss you too.”
The 31-year-old veteran showed why he remains one of the league’s premier receivers, especially when improvising with his new quarterback. Their most memorable connection came in the fourth quarter when Maye rolled right and motioned Diggs deeper downfield before hitting him with a 32-yard sideline strike. On the next play, New England scored to take a 13–10 lead.

Diggs has become a stabilizing force for Maye, much like he was for Josh Allen early in the Bills quarterback’s career. The duo’s chemistry was evident again early in the fourth quarter, when Diggs’ 30-yard catch-and-run set up another Patriots touchdown that extended the lead to 20–10.
“I saw a young quarterback take a step in the right direction,” Diggs said afterward. “They compared him to Josh Allen all week — and that’s a big comparison. But Drake Maye has to be Drake Maye. I’m proud of how he led this team tonight.”
Buffalo rallied to tie the game at 20-20 late in the fourth quarter, but Maye and Diggs had one last answer. With just over two minutes remaining, Maye guided a 37-yard drive that began with yet another completion to Diggs — this time while the quarterback was being dragged to the turf. The play set up Borregales’ game-winning field goal and sealed Maye’s first NFL game-winning drive.
The victory lifted the Patriots to 3–2, snapping the Bills’ unbeaten start (now 4–1) and shaking up the early AFC East standings. For a team rebuilding under Vrabel and breaking in a rookie quarterback, this was more than just a win — it was a statement.
Maye’s ability to extend plays and Diggs’ leadership on and off the field gave New England the edge against one of the league’s toughest home teams. As the locker room erupted in celebration, players chanted “Andy! Andy! Andy!” in honor of rookie kicker Borregales’ clutch performance.
Maye, standing beside Diggs after the game, summed up the night perfectly:
“It’s storybook. Coming back here, first game since the trade, in prime time — you could see all week how much it meant to Stef. He loves football. He’s got plenty left in the tank. It’s good he’s a Patriot.”
With Maye’s growth and Diggs’ leadership, the Patriots suddenly look like a team capable of surprising more opponents as the season unfolds.
