Former Alabama quarterback and national champion AJ McCarron has officially announced his run for Alabama lieutenant governor in 2026. The Mobile native, known for leading the Crimson Tide to back-to-back national championships, now turns his focus toward politics. His campaign centers on conservative values, Christian faith, and outsider leadership.
In a video announcement, McCarron connected lessons from his football career to public service. “Coach Saban taught me the principles of being a leader,” he said. “Together we won back-to-back national championships. Playing in the NFL reinforced the importance of achieving goals bigger than ourselves.”
A Competitive Republican Field
McCarron enters a crowded Republican primary. His opponents include Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen, Agriculture Commissioner Rick Pate, Opelika pastor Dean Odle, and commercial realtor Nicole Wadsworth. Former Secretary of State John Merrill may also join the race.
The primary is set for May 19, 2026. With several established names in the field, McCarron’s celebrity and clean outsider image could give him a unique advantage. Moreover, his message appeals strongly to conservatives who value authenticity and fresh leadership.

Faith, Family, and Alabama Roots
McCarron highlighted his deep ties to Alabama and his strong Christian faith. “My roots run deep in Alabama,” he said. “With my football career behind me, Katherine and I are raising our boys here, instilling in them our deep Christian faith.”
He and his wife, Katherine Webb McCarron—the 2012 Miss Alabama USA—co-own McCarron Real Estate. The couple lives in Mobile with their three sons. His campaign emphasizes family values and a belief in protecting Alabama’s moral foundation.

Motivated by Tragedy
McCarron said his decision to run was deeply influenced by the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. “Alabama’s conservative and cultural values are under attack from every direction,” he explained. “That’s why Charlie Kirk’s assassination affected so many of us so deeply.”
He described the tragedy as a turning point. “His example convinced me to get off the sidelines and into the game,” McCarron added. With this message, he hopes to inspire voters who want leaders grounded in conviction and courage.
Alliance With Conservative Leaders
Throughout his announcement, McCarron praised figures such as Donald Trump and Senator Tommy Tuberville. He credited Trump for inspiring his political journey and emphasized his commitment to conservative ideals. “When Coach Tuberville is governor, I’ll be the quarterback who helps pass his conservative outsider agenda,” he said.
By aligning with these popular figures, McCarron aims to build trust with the Republican base. Furthermore, he criticized “Montgomery insiders and career politicians,” promising to bring new energy to Alabama politics.
From Football Legend to Political Newcomer
McCarron’s career achievements strengthen his leadership image. As Alabama’s starting quarterback, he led the team to national titles in 2011 and 2012. He won the Maxwell Award in 2013 and finished as Heisman Trophy runner-up that same year.
After college, he spent nine seasons in the NFL and later joined the St. Louis Battlehawks in the United Football League in 2024. Beyond the field, he co-hosts The Dynasty: A Podcast on the Alabama Crimson Tide alongside Trent Richardson and Chris Stewart. This connection keeps him in touch with Alabama fans and current events.
Leadership Beyond the Gridiron
AJ McCarron’s shift from athlete to political candidate showcases his dedication to leadership and service. His campaign blends faith, family, and conservative ideals with a message of renewal for Alabama. As the 2026 race approaches, McCarron’s name recognition and authentic voice could make him a serious contender for lieutenant governor.
