Iraq’s journey toward a second FIFA World Cup appearance continues to intensify as they prepare for another decisive clash against the United Arab Emirates. Supporters of the Lions of Mesopotamia still remember how the nation came painfully close to qualifying for Mexico 1986 for a second time. In the fourth round of that campaign, Iraq fell short of securing Group B’s automatic spot, losing out to Saudi Arabia due to goal difference.
Now, the team approaches a longer and more challenging route, yet their recent performances show signs of maturity. Their strong display in Abu Dhabi — even though Ali Al-Hamadi’s early goal lasted only eight minutes — gives fans plenty to be optimistic about heading into the Basra showdown.
Graham Arnold’s side has been in excellent rhythm. Australia may not be the opponents here, but the form reference remains valuable: Arnold’s men are currently enjoying a six-match unbeaten run with four victories during that time. For Iraq, this level of consistency among their competitive peers sets a confident tone for Tuesday’s match.
Moreover, Iraq’s head-to-head results against UAE stand out as a major positive. The Lions of Mesopotamia have now gone unbeaten in six consecutive meetings. Notably, one of their two victories in that period came the last time they hosted UAE during the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. This pattern strengthens their belief that Basra can once again serve as a fortress.

For UAE, the story has been more complicated. Cosmin Olăroiu’s side nearly ended their winless streak in the first leg when Caio Lucas headed home a late effort. However, VAR intervened, ruling the goal offside and leaving Al Abyad frustrated. The setback now places extra pressure on the Emiratis as they head into a difficult away leg.
The UAE have failed to win their last two matches, including a 2-1 loss to Qatar in the second round of fixtures. That defeat hurt their chances of securing automatic qualification and forced them into a more uncertain route. Before that dip, however, UAE looked sharp with four straight wins — three in friendlies and a crucial 2-1 victory over Oman in the qualifiers. Regaining that early momentum remains their main objective as they chase a second World Cup appearance after their historic 1990 campaign.
Offensively, UAE have been consistent. They have scored in each of their previous seven matches, averaging 1.7 goals in that span. Yet, whether this attacking confidence can break down an Iraq defence with four clean sheets in their last six outings remains a key question.

Iraq face a setback with midfielder Aimar Sher suspended after receiving his second yellow card of the qualifying campaign. His absence could open a path for Manchester United academy graduate Zidane Iqbal, who may start on the right side of a four-man midfield.
Star forward Ayman Hussein is also expected to return to the starting XI. Hussein came on at halftime in the previous encounter, and given his impressive tally of eight goals in this qualifiers campaign, he is likely to lead the attack. His presence could push Al-Hamadi to the bench despite the latter’s early strike in the first leg.
Hussein will likely partner Mohanad Ali, forming a potent two-man attack as Iraq look to seize control early in Basra.
UAE captain and veteran goalkeeper Khalid Eisa was crucial in the previous leg, saving four of the five shots on target. His leadership and shot-stopping skills will be vital once again.
Midfielder Luan Pereira, who scored the equaliser in the first meeting, is expected to remain a major creative force on the right flank.
Meanwhile, Caio Lucas — whose late, disallowed header nearly gave UAE a dramatic victory — is pushing to start this time. Brazilian-born forward Caio Canedo is also in contention for a place in the lineup after an energetic cameo.
With both teams showing flashes of quality and posing different strengths, this matchup promises high intensity. Iraq’s strong home support, defensive stability, and improved cohesion give them a solid platform. UAE’s attacking consistency and experience, however, mean they remain dangerous and capable of turning the game around.
The clash in Basra could become one of the most pivotal fixtures of this qualifying round, and both sides will be hungry to seize the advantage.
