Riyad Mahrez Confident Algeria Can Restore AFCON Glory in Morocco

Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has expressed strong belief that the Desert Foxes can put recent Africa Cup of Nations disappointments behind them as they begin their 2025 AFCON campaign in Morocco. The former champions open their tournament on Wednesday with a Group E clash against Sudan in Rabat.

Algeria currently sit fourth among African nations in the FIFA rankings. That status places expectations firmly on their shoulders, but Mahrez sees it as motivation rather than pressure.

Moreover, a strong AFCON performance would provide crucial momentum ahead of the 2026 World Cup in North America. Algeria have already qualified for the tournament, marking their first World Cup appearance since 2014.

Equally important is goalkeeper Luca Zidane, who made his Algeria debut in October. Born in Marseille, the son of France legend Zinedine Zidane currently plays for Granada in Spain’s second division.

For coach Vladimir Petkovic, Zidane could be the answer to a long-standing problem position.

“Luca has integrated very well into the squad,” Mahrez explained. “His name carries weight, but he is handling it calmly and giving everything for the team.”

Algeria face a demanding road in Group E, where they will also meet Burkina Faso and Equatorial Guinea. Each match is expected to be fiercely contested, leaving little margin for error.
