Browns Conduct Second Interview With Jim Schwartz for Head Coach Opening

The Cleveland Browns have taken a significant step in their head coaching search by conducting a second-round interview with current defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. The interview took place on Monday, making Schwartz the first candidate to advance to a second meeting for the vacant head coach position.

Schwartz initially interviewed with the Browns on January 8, and his rapid progression in the hiring process signals strong internal support. With Cleveland’s defensive dominance over the past three seasons, Schwartz has emerged as a leading contender to guide the franchise forward.

Jim Schwartz’s Impact on the Browns’ Defense

Since rejoining the Browns organization in 2023 as defensive coordinator, Jim Schwartz has transformed Cleveland into one of the most feared defensive units in the NFL. Under his leadership, the Browns consistently rank at or near the top of the league in nearly every major defensive category.

Cleveland currently ranks first in the NFL in total yards allowed per game, opponent first downs allowed, third-down conversion percentage, fourth-down efficiency, total passing yards allowed, and first downs conceded per pass attempt. The Browns also lead the league in tackles for loss, showcasing an aggressive, disruptive defensive philosophy.

In addition, Cleveland ranks third in total team sacks and is tied for second in the NFL with eight defensive touchdowns, highlighting the unit’s ability to generate game-changing plays.

Record-Breaking 2025 Defensive Performance

The Browns closed the 2025 regular season firmly entrenched among the league’s elite defenses. They allowed just 283.6 total yards per game, the fourth-fewest in the NFL, and surrendered only 167.2 passing yards per game, ranking third overall.

Cleveland finished the season with 53 sacks, setting a new franchise record for sacks in a single season. Defensive end Myles Garrett delivered a historic campaign, breaking the NFL single-season sack record with 23 sacks—a milestone that further strengthened Schwartz’s coaching credentials.

Another remarkable achievement under Schwartz’s watch is Cleveland’s streak of 45 consecutive games without allowing a 300-yard passer. This is the longest active streak in the NFL and the longest league-wide since the Indianapolis Colts accomplished a 52-game stretch between 2005 and 2008.

A Coach With Proven Head Coaching Experience

Jim Schwartz brings valuable head coaching experience to the Browns’ search. He previously served as head coach of the Detroit Lions from 2009 to 2013. During that tenure, he guided Detroit to a 10–6 record in 2011, marking the franchise’s first playoff appearance since 1999.

That same season, the Lions’ defense led the NFL in return touchdowns, setting a franchise record with seven defensive scores—five from interceptions and two from fumble returns. Schwartz’s ability to build opportunistic defenses has remained a hallmark of his coaching career.

Nearly Three Decades of NFL Coaching Excellence

Schwartz’s NFL résumé spans 29 years, including 17 seasons as a defensive coordinator. Before his current role in Cleveland, he held defensive coordinator positions with the Tennessee Titans (2001–2008), Buffalo Bills (2014), and Philadelphia Eagles (2016–2020).

His most notable success came with Philadelphia, where he helped engineer the Eagles’ championship run in Super Bowl LII. That season, Schwartz’s defense led the NFL in rush defense, allowing just 79.2 rushing yards per game, a key factor in the Eagles’ title victory.

Why Jim Schwartz Is a Strong Head Coach Candidate

The Browns’ decision to grant Jim Schwartz a second interview reflects confidence in his leadership, experience, and ability to sustain elite performance. His deep familiarity with the roster, proven defensive success, and prior head coaching background make him a compelling option to lead Cleveland into its next era.

As the Browns continue evaluating candidates, Schwartz’s consistent results and organizational knowledge could give him a decisive edge in the race for the head coach position.
