Caden Pierce has officially chosen his next destination. The 2023–24 Ivy League Player of the Year announced that he will spend his final season of eligibility at Purdue University, joining one of the top programs in the Big Ten Conference.

After narrowing his recruitment to five schools, Pierce selected Purdue over Duke University, Gonzaga University, University of Louisville, and University of Connecticut. The decision marks a major step in Pierce’s collegiate basketball journey as he prepares for what he hopes will be a launchpad to a professional career.

Pierce approached each official visit with an open mind. Ultimately, Purdue stood out as the place that “felt most like home.” Located in West Lafayette, Indiana, the program offers both competitive excellence and geographic convenience.

For Pierce, the move brings him closer to his hometown of Glen Ellyn, Illinois. After spending four years on the East Coast, returning to the Midwest allows friends and family to attend games more regularly. That proximity played a meaningful role in his final decision.

Beyond location, Pierce emphasized fit and opportunity. With only one year of eligibility remaining, immediate playing time was a priority. He wanted a system where he could step in, contribute right away, and showcase his skills on a national stage.

A Fresh Start After a Turbulent Season

Pierce’s transfer follows a challenging period at Princeton University. He opted to sit out his senior year to preserve eligibility after a turbulent 2024–25 season that saw significant roster turnover and coaching changes.

The departures of key players and staff reshaped the program’s trajectory. During that time, Pierce leaned heavily on trusted voices, including former teammates and family members, while navigating the transfer portal process.

Entering the portal proved intense. Within the first two days, he heard from more than 20 programs. However, Purdue was among the first to reach out, demonstrating clear interest and vision for his role on the team.

Purdue’s Championship Ambitions

Under head coach Matt Painter, Purdue has become a powerhouse in the Big Ten. The Boilermakers have captured 26 Big Ten regular-season championships and reached two NCAA championship games, most recently in 2024.

Although Purdue has yet to win an NCAA title, the program consistently competes at the highest level. Ahead of the 2025–26 season, the Boilermakers were ranked No. 1 in the AP poll and remain among the nation’s top teams.

The Big Ten itself is widely regarded as one of the toughest conferences in college basketball. With multiple programs projected to make the NCAA Tournament, Pierce will face elite competition every week.

Expected Role in the Frontcourt

At Purdue, Pierce is projected to fill a significant frontcourt role. With graduating seniors departing, the roster will feature a younger core next season. That shift creates an opportunity for Pierce to emerge as a veteran leader.

He views this as a chance to prove he can perform in the Big Ten immediately. Moreover, he hopes to guide younger players while making a strong individual impact.

Pierce has also identified key areas for development. Expanding his offensive game—particularly improving his three-point shooting—remains at the top of his priority list. Becoming a consistent perimeter threat would open up driving lanes and increase his overall effectiveness.

Eyes on the NBA

Pierce considers his year at Purdue “almost the first stop” in his professional basketball career. His goal is to reach the NBA in 2027. Playing for a nationally ranked program like Purdue increases exposure, competition level, and development opportunities.

Importantly, he understands the stakes. A strong season in the Big Ten could significantly enhance his draft prospects. However, Pierce has also expressed flexibility, noting that if the NBA path shifts, he intends to continue playing at the highest level possible.

Growth Beyond Basketball

Sitting out a season presented challenges. Training alone and maintaining daily discipline tested Pierce mentally and physically. Still, he believes the experience strengthened him as both a player and a person.

This fall, he will enroll at Purdue as a graduate student and begin summer workouts with the team. He is especially excited to play inside Mackey Arena, widely regarded as one of the best atmospheres in college basketball.
