Mercedes’ George Russell produced a sensational performance at Marina Bay to secure pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix. It marked his first pole since June’s Canadian Grand Prix, which he went on to win.
Russell’s Q3 pace stunned the paddock as he delivered two flawless laps — even after brushing the wall at Turn 17. His best time put him 0.182 seconds clear of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, while McLaren’s championship leader Oscar Piastri settled for third.
This was Mercedes’ first pole in Singapore since Lewis Hamilton’s famous 2018 lap, underlining the surprise factor of Russell’s achievement. With Russell gatecrashing what many expected to be a McLaren vs. Verstappen showdown, the championship battle has taken another twist.
Verstappen, still yet to claim pole in Singapore during his career, was left frustrated in qualifying. On his final run, he lost momentum in the closing sector after Lando Norris slowed on the entry to the pits.
His race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, dryly remarked, “You can thank your mate for that,” referencing Verstappen’s friendship with Norris. Verstappen later added: “Without that I think it would have been close for pole.”
Despite this setback, the Dutchman starts second — ahead of both McLarens — and remains in a strong position to chase his first Marina Bay victory.

Oscar Piastri admitted he simply lacked the pace to fight Russell, finishing 0.366 seconds off pole. His teammate Lando Norris managed only fifth, behind Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli.
Ferrari endured a quieter session, with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc lining up sixth and seventh. For a team that had hoped to shine in Singapore’s tight, technical layout, the result was underwhelming.
Reflecting on his performance, Russell said: “I had a difficult day yesterday for many reasons but it’s good to come back and get a good result today. I knew there was potential in the car.”
As it stands, the Brit leads Verstappen and Piastri on the grid for Sunday’s showdown. With McLaren still in the hunt and Verstappen eager to break his Singapore duck, the stage is set for a thrilling Grand Prix.
