World number one Aryna Sabalenka delivered a powerful comeback performance to defeat Japan’s Naomi Osaka in a thrilling fourth-round clash at the Madrid Open. The Belarusian star fought back from a set and break down to secure a hard-earned victory and book her place in the quarter-finals.
This dramatic win further strengthens Sabalenka’s dominance on clay and extends her remarkable winning streak in 2026.
The match began with Osaka displaying some of her strongest tennis of the season. The former world number one controlled the tempo early and showcased precise shot-making that challenged Sabalenka’s aggressive style.
Osaka dominated the first-set tie-break, winning it 7-1, after the set remained tightly contested. She carried her momentum into the second set, breaking Sabalenka’s serve early to take a 2-1 lead. At that stage, it looked like Osaka might pull off a major upset against the tournament favorite.
However, Sabalenka responded like a true champion. She immediately broke back with a commanding 40-0 game, leveling the score at 2-2. From that moment onward, the world number one steadily gained control.
After breaking Osaka again to lead 5-3, Sabalenka confidently served out the second set 6-3, forcing the match into a decisive third set.

Once the match entered the final set, Sabalenka elevated her game to another level. Her powerful serves and aggressive groundstrokes left Osaka struggling to find rhythm.
Sabalenka conceded just three points in the entire final set—an extraordinary display of dominance under pressure. She sealed the match with her sixth ace, completing a 6-7 (1-7), 6-3, 6-2 victory in two hours and 20 minutes.
This triumph marked her 15th consecutive victory of the season and her ninth straight win in Madrid, reinforcing her status as the player to beat in women’s tennis.
After the match, Sabalenka praised Osaka’s performance, saying she was forced to raise her level significantly to secure the win.
“She played incredible tennis. I’m happy she brought that fight because I had to level up my game,” Sabalenka said.
Elsewhere in the tournament, American third seed Coco Gauff experienced a surprising defeat against Czech rising star Linda Noskova.
Gauff lost 4-6, 6-1, 6-7, despite leading 4-1 in the deciding set and holding a 4-2 advantage in the tie-break. Noskova displayed remarkable resilience, battling back twice to secure her place in the quarter-finals.
Gauff had reportedly been dealing with a stomach virus, which may have impacted her performance during crucial moments. As a result of this loss, she is expected to drop from third to fourth in the updated rankings, with Poland’s Iga Swiatek moving ahead.
Noskova admitted she struggled to maintain rhythm during the match but remained focused on recovery during critical stages.
“Sometimes I get lost on court, especially in the second set. I had to find my rhythm again in the third,” Noskova explained.
Czech star Noskova will next face Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in the quarter-finals.
Kostyuk secured her place in the last eight after defeating American Caty McNally 6-2, 6-3. The victory marked her ninth consecutive win and her second straight appearance in the Madrid quarter-finals.
Her consistent performance this season has made her one of the tournament’s rising threats.
Sabalenka’s next opponent will be American Hailey Baptiste, who earned her quarter-final spot after defeating Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic 6-1, 6-7 (14-16), 6-3.
This matchup carries additional intrigue, as Sabalenka previously defeated Baptiste in the quarter-finals of the Miami Open earlier this year on her way to winning the title.
With her confidence soaring and momentum building, Sabalenka enters the quarter-finals as the clear favorite.
The Belarusian powerhouse has enjoyed an outstanding season so far. In addition to her strong showing in Madrid, Sabalenka has already secured titles at the Indian Wells Open and Brisbane International.
Her consistency, aggressive playing style, and mental toughness have made her one of the most dominant players in women’s tennis this year.
If she maintains this form, Sabalenka is widely considered a strong contender for major titles throughout the season.
