Katherine Legge Attempts Historic Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600 Double

Katherine Legge is preparing for one of the toughest challenges in motorsports history. The 45-year-old driver plans to compete in both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day during Memorial Day weekend.

Known as “The Double,” the challenge requires drivers to race nearly 1,100 miles in a single day. Only five drivers have attempted it before, and just Tony Stewart successfully completed all 1,100 miles in 2001. Legge now hopes to become the first woman ever to finish both iconic races on the same day.

The Double Remains One of Racing’s Hardest Challenges

The Indy 500 begins in Indianapolis during the afternoon, while the Coca-Cola 600 takes place later that evening in Charlotte. Drivers must quickly travel between states after completing the first race.

Legge explained that every minute of the day has already been planned. She will travel by helicopter and plane between race tracks while focusing on hydration and recovery. Weather delays could still create problems, as recent attempts by Kyle Larson proved. Larson missed the start of the NASCAR race in 2024 after rain delayed the Indy 500.

Legge admitted the challenge demands incredible endurance and concentration. However, she believes the opportunity is worth the risk because it can inspire future racers.

Experience Across Multiple Racing Series

Legge brings years of experience into this historic attempt. She has competed in Formula E, IMSA SportsCar Championship, A1 Grand Prix, and endurance events such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

This season marks her fifth appearance in the Indy 500. Her best finish came in 2012 when she placed 22nd. She also holds the record for the fastest qualifying speed by a woman at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

In NASCAR, Legge made her Cup Series debut in 2025. Her best result came at the Brickyard 400, where she finished 17th. She recently completed her eighth Cup Series start at Watkins Glen.

For the Indy 500, Legge will drive the No. 11 Chevrolet for A.J. Foyt Enterprises. Later that evening, she will race the No. 78 Chevrolet for Live Fast Motorsports in Charlotte.

The project also required years of preparation. NASCAR licensing rules forced Legge to complete several races before earning approval to compete at superspeedway events like the Coca-Cola 600.

Following the Legacy of Women in Racing

Legge’s attempt comes nearly 50 years after Janet Guthrie became the first woman to complete practice laps for the Indy 500. Guthrie later raced in NASCAR’s World 600, now called the Coca-Cola 600, and opened doors for future female drivers.

Danica Patrick later became one of the most successful women in motorsports history. Patrick earned a third-place finish in the 2009 Indy 500 and won the pole position for the 2013 Daytona 500. However, she never attempted The Double before retiring in 2018.

Legge hopes her effort will motivate more young women to enter racing. She believes female representation in both NASCAR and IndyCar remains limited. According to Legge, motorsports still needs stronger development systems for young women who dream of reaching the top level.
