The U.S. Amateur 2026 is set for a thrilling week as many of the world’s best young golfers compete for one of amateur golf’s biggest prizes. Among the leading names are Tennessee standout Jackson Herrington and Jacksonville Beach star Miles Russell.
Herrington enters the tournament with unfinished business. Russell arrives with strong recent form and a place among the world’s top amateurs. Both players will face a demanding seven-day test in Pennsylvania.
Jackson Herrington Returns With One Goal
Jackson Herrington knows what it takes to reach the final of the U.S. Amateur. The Tennessee golfer finished runner-up last year at The Olympic Club.
His impressive run earned him invitations to both the Masters and U.S. Open. However, he missed the cut at each major.
That experience has changed his mindset.
Herrington is no longer simply trying to advance further than the previous year. He wants to win the championship.
The left-hander has openly admitted that losing has become a major source of motivation. He believes he has the ability to compete with the best players in the world. Now, he wants to prove it on the biggest amateur stage.
A Tough Road to the U.S. Amateur Title
The U.S. Amateur features a unique and exhausting format. The 312-player field will begin with two rounds of stroke play.
Players will compete at both Philadelphia Country Club and Merion Golf Club. Those opening rounds will take place on August 10 and 11.
Only the top 64 players will advance to match play.
The match-play stage begins on August 12 at Merion. Competitors must then survive several elimination rounds before reaching the championship match.
The final will feature 36 holes on Sunday.
Herrington already understands the pressure of this format. Last year, he survived a 20-hole battle against Caleb Bond in the Round of 16. He then overcame a late challenge from Niall Shiels Donegan in the semifinals.
That experience could prove valuable again.

Herrington Makes Major Changes
Herrington has also spent much of the summer working on his game.
After the U.S. Open, he ended a long relationship with his previous swing coach. He felt that his development had started to plateau.
He then worked with Jason Birnbaum before turning to Sean Foley.
The partnership with Foley quickly produced positive signs. Herrington felt comfortable with the new approach and gained greater confidence in his swing.
His performance at the Western Amateur offered another encouraging signal. After opening with a 3-over 74, he responded with a 5-under 66.
Since then, Herrington has focused heavily on preparation. He has spent long hours on the range working on yardages and different shots. He has also remained in regular contact with Foley.
His preparation reflects the ambition he carries into this year’s tournament.
Miles Russell Joins a Star-Studded Group
Miles Russell will also attract significant attention at the U.S. Amateur.
The Jacksonville Beach native currently ranks No. 4 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. The USGA has placed him in one of the tournament’s strongest opening groups.
Russell will play alongside No. 1 Preston Stout and No. 3 Tyler Watts.
The trio represents three of the world’s top four amateur golfers. England’s Tyler Weaver, ranked No. 2, is not competing in the tournament.
Russell, Stout and Watts will begin their stroke-play campaign together. They are scheduled to tee off at Merion on August 10 before moving to Philadelphia Country Club for their second round.
The group provides an early showcase of elite amateur talent.

Russell Brings Strong Summer Form
Russell enters the U.S. Amateur after an impressive summer.
He reached the final of the U.S. Junior Amateur. He also advanced to the semifinals of the Western Amateur.
Those results have strengthened his reputation as one of America’s leading young golfers.
Russell has already faced several of the country’s best amateur players this summer. He will now attempt to take another major step at the U.S. Amateur.
The tournament also features other notable young players, including Tyler Mawhinney. The Fleming Island golfer will compete alongside future Vanderbilt teammate Michael Riebe and high school player Anson Munzlinger.
