The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing back a familiar face to strengthen their defensive line. Veteran defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah has agreed to a one-year contract with the Chiefs ahead of the 2026 NFL season.
The move gives Kansas City another experienced pass rusher for training camp and the preseason. It also reunites Ogbah with the franchise where he won Super Bowl LIV.
Emmanuel Ogbah Returns to Kansas City
Ogbah previously played for the Chiefs during the 2019 and 2020 seasons. Kansas City acquired him from the Cleveland Browns in 2019 in exchange for defensive back Eric Murray.
The veteran defensive end made 10 appearances for the Chiefs during his final season with the team. He also made four starts and recorded 5.5 sacks.
Ogbah helped Kansas City win Super Bowl LIV. The Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31–20 in Miami to claim their first championship in 50 years.
After that season, Ogbah moved on to the Miami Dolphins. He spent several seasons in Miami and became an important part of their defensive front.
Ogbah Brings Valuable NFL Experience
Ogbah entered the NFL as a second-round selection by the Cleveland Browns in the 2016 NFL Draft. The Oklahoma State product has built a long career as a versatile edge defender.
His best stretch came during his time with Miami. Ogbah earned a four-year contract with the Dolphins in 2022. That deal reportedly averaged $16.35 million per season.
His production later declined. Miami eventually released him from that contract. Ogbah then returned to the Dolphins on a cheaper one-year agreement.
He signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars last year. However, the 2025 season proved difficult for the veteran.
Ogbah appeared in 13 games for Jacksonville. He played 38% of the team’s defensive snaps. He recorded only 0.5 sacks and seven quarterback pressures.
Still, his previous production gives Kansas City reason to believe he can contribute.

Chiefs Need More Edge Rusher Depth
The Chiefs have faced changes along their defensive front this offseason. Kansas City released Mike Danna and also lost Charles Omenihu during free agency.
Janarius Robinson remains unsigned. That left the team with limited veteran depth at defensive end.
George Karlaftis remains one of the key players on the edge. Felix Anudike-Uzomah also has an important role to play.
The Chiefs also added second-round rookie R Mason Thomas. However, young players often benefit from having experienced veterans around them.
Ogbah can provide that experience.

A Low-Risk Move for Kansas City
The one-year structure makes this an interesting addition for the Chiefs. Kansas City entered Tuesday with less than $4 million in salary-cap space.
That financial limitation makes major roster moves difficult. A short-term deal for a veteran could therefore make sense.
Ogbah does not need to become a full-time starter. Instead, Kansas City can use him as a rotational pass rusher.
His familiarity with the organization could also speed up his transition. He already knows the team’s culture and defensive system.
That could help him compete for a roster spot during preseason action.
Ogbah Could Mentor Young Chiefs Defenders
The Chiefs are developing several young edge rushers. Ogbah’s experience could become valuable beyond his production on the field.
Players such as R Mason Thomas and Ashton Gillotte can benefit from working with a veteran who has played in important NFL games.
Ogbah has also experienced the pressure of playing for Kansas City. His Super Bowl experience gives him a unique perspective.
If he earns a roster spot, he could provide depth while helping younger players develop.
What Ogbah’s Role Could Look Like
Ogbah will likely enter training camp competing for a rotational role. His recent numbers do not guarantee a major position on the depth chart.
However, his previous success gives him an opportunity.
Kansas City needs reliable depth behind its primary edge rushers. Ogbah can potentially fill that gap without requiring a major financial commitment.

Chiefs Add Experience Before 2026 Season
The Emmanuel Ogbah signing gives Kansas City another experienced defensive end before the 2026 NFL season begins.
The veteran has already won a Super Bowl with the franchise. He also understands the expectations that come with playing in Kansas City.
His 2025 season was disappointing. Yet the Chiefs are betting that he can provide more value in a familiar environment.
