The Detroit Tigers have made a notable roster move ahead of Sunday’s series finale against the Chicago White Sox. The club selected the contract of outfielder Brett Callahan from Triple-A Toledo, giving the 24-year-old his first opportunity to play in the major leagues.
Callahan is set to start in left field and bat seventh at Comerica Park. The move comes as the Tigers deal with several injuries in their outfield.
Brett Callahan Gets His First MLB Opportunity
Brett Callahan was selected by the Tigers in the 13th round of the 2023 MLB Draft out of St. Joseph’s University. His path to the majors has taken time, but his performance in 2026 has pushed him into the spotlight.
Callahan began the season with Double-A Erie. He hit .268 with an impressive .878 OPS across 265 plate appearances. His production translated to a 133 wRC+, showing that his bat was well above league average.
His performance also highlighted his strong plate discipline. Callahan posted a 12.8% walk rate while striking out 20.8% of the time.
He later moved to Triple-A Toledo. His power numbers dropped at the higher level, but he continued to make contact and reach base. Across his time in Toledo, he hit .271/.351/.338 with one home run and 17 RBIs in 36 games.
Tigers Need a Left-Handed Outfield Bat
The timing of Callahan’s promotion is important for Detroit. The Tigers have recently lost several left-handed hitting outfielders to injuries.
Riley Greene, Kerry Carpenter and James Outman are all currently on the injured list. That has created a need for additional outfield depth.
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said the team wanted a left-handed hitter who could complement right-handed options such as Ben Malgeri and Corey Julks.
Callahan could provide that flexibility. He has experience playing all three outfield positions. His speed, range and strong arm also give Detroit another defensive option.
The Tigers are expected to face several right-handed pitchers in the coming days. That makes Callahan’s left-handed bat particularly valuable.

Speed Could Become a Major Weapon
Callahan brings more than offensive potential. His speed has been one of his most notable tools during his minor-league career.
He has stolen 29 bases in 2026, demonstrating his ability to create pressure on opposing defenses. His athleticism could also help the Tigers manufacture runs while several regular offensive players remain unavailable.
Callahan also missed significant time during the 2024 and 2025 seasons because of injuries. However, he has remained healthy in 2026 and has played a career-high 96 games across the organization’s top two levels.
MLB Pipeline ranks him as the No. 19 prospect in the Tigers’ system. His combination of speed, defensive versatility and offensive potential makes him an intriguing addition.

Trei Cruz Designated for Assignment
To make room for Callahan, Detroit designated utility player Trei Cruz for assignment.
Cruz, who turns 28 next month, has struggled to establish himself in the majors. He has only five at-bats with Detroit this season and has not recorded a hit.
Cruz also went 0-for-5 with three strikeouts during his brief MLB debut earlier this season.
At Triple-A Toledo, he has hit .230 with a .615 OPS across 305 plate appearances. Injuries have also limited his opportunities during 2026.
However, Cruz offers considerable defensive versatility. He can play every position except pitcher and catcher. If he clears waivers, the Tigers could outright him back to Toledo.
What Callahan’s Promotion Means for Detroit
Callahan now has an opportunity to establish himself during an important stretch of the Tigers’ season.
Detroit entered Sunday’s game trailing in the American League Central after losing the first two games of the series against Chicago. With several outfielders injured, the team needs contributions from unexpected sources.
Callahan could provide an immediate spark. His left-handed swing, speed and defensive ability fit the Tigers’ current needs.
His first MLB game will also give Detroit a closer look at whether he can remain useful when injured players return. If he performs well, Callahan could potentially earn a backup or platoon role later in the season.
For a 13th-round selection who was not initially viewed as a top prospect, reaching the majors represents a major career milestone. Now, Brett Callahan has a chance to show that he belongs in Detroit for more than just one game.
