Arsenal have reached an agreement with Aston Villa to sign Ezri Konsa in a deal worth £51 million plus add-ons. The 28-year-old England international is expected to complete his medical on Thursday after saying goodbye to his Aston Villa teammates.
The move represents a practical addition for Arsenal as Mikel Arteta prepares his squad for another demanding Premier League campaign. With William Saliba expected to miss the opening months of the season, the Gunners needed an experienced defender who could immediately provide quality at centre-back.
Arsenal have reportedly been interested in Konsa for much of the summer. Their need for defensive reinforcements became even clearer after Saliba aggravated a back problem toward the end of last season.
The Gunners also explored a potential move for Jarell Quansah, but Bayer Leverkusen were unwilling to sell the young defender. That left Konsa as an attractive alternative, particularly because of his Premier League experience and versatility.
Konsa can operate as a right-sided centre-back or right-back, although his strongest position is in the middle of the defence. His arrival gives Arteta another reliable option while Saliba works his way back to full fitness.

The biggest benefit of the Ezri Konsa transfer is his experience. The defender has been a Premier League starter for seven seasons and has also played in the Champions League.
Konsa is not known as an overly aggressive defender. Instead, he relies heavily on positioning, anticipation and intelligent decision-making. Those qualities fit well with Arsenal’s possession-based style and Arteta’s preference for defenders who can remain composed under pressure.
He is also comfortable with the ball at his feet. His passing ability allows him to help Arsenal build attacks from the back, while his ability to carry the ball forward gives the team another way to progress possession.
The main question will be whether Arteta selects Konsa or Cristhian Mosquera as his first-choice right-sided centre-back once the new signing settles into the squad.
Mosquera has impressed when given opportunities and remains an exciting young player. However, there is a major difference between providing promising performances as a 22-year-old and becoming a regular starter for a team competing for the Premier League title. Konsa’s experience could give him the advantage.

Arsenal’s defensive problems last season highlighted the importance of squad depth. Injuries affected Saliba, Jurrien Timber and Ben White at crucial stages, leaving Arteta with fewer reliable options during the biggest matches.
The Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain also demonstrated how injuries and limited defensive depth can become decisive late in a season. Saliba was dealing with a back issue, Timber was unavailable as a starter, and White was injured.
Konsa’s arrival should reduce the pressure on Arsenal’s defensive core. Instead of rushing Saliba back into action, Arteta can allow him to recover properly. When Saliba returns, Arsenal will have greater competition and depth across the back line.
The £51 million fee may seem significant for a 28-year-old defender, but Arsenal’s current situation makes the decision understandable. The club has built a squad capable of challenging for major trophies, and the priority is now to turn that potential into silverware.
Adding Bruno Guimaraes and Konsa to an already talented squad shows Arsenal are willing to strengthen key areas rather than simply rely on their existing players.
There is also a longer-term consideration. Arsenal’s current core will eventually need refreshing, and the club will have to manage the transition carefully over the next few years. However, that is a problem for the future.
Right now, Arsenal have an opportunity to compete for the Premier League and other major trophies. Konsa directly addresses an immediate weakness and gives Arteta another proven defender.
Ezri Konsa may not be the most glamorous signing of Arsenal’s summer, but he could become one of the most important. His Premier League experience, defensive intelligence and versatility make him an ideal option while Saliba is unavailable.
More importantly, Konsa gives Arsenal something every title contender needs: reliable depth.
The transfer is clearly designed to strengthen Arsenal’s chances in the short term, but it could also protect the team from the injury problems that affected them during crucial moments last season. If Konsa helps Arsenal remain competitive throughout the campaign, the £51 million investment could prove extremely valuable.
For a club determined to win trophies, this is exactly the type of pragmatic move that can make the difference.
