Caitlin Clark is preparing for one of the biggest moments of her young basketball career. The Indiana Fever star will make her senior FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup debut with Team USA in Berlin.
However, her role on the team remains one of the biggest talking points. Clark is a global basketball superstar, but Team USA coach Kara Lawson has not finalized the minutes or starting lineup.
Team USA begins its 2026 World Cup campaign against China on September 4. The roster features several elite players, including Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier and Chelsea Gray.
Clark is expected to make a major impact. Still, she may not start every game.
Sports host Rachel DeMita recently discussed the possibility of Clark coming off the bench. She noted that Clark was also the last player to enter the starting lineup during the World Cup qualifying tournament.
Team USA frequently changed its starting five during that tournament. Clark eventually started against New Zealand. She returned to the bench against Spain.
That experience shows that starting does not necessarily determine a player’s importance.
Clark’s performance during the qualifying tournament gives Team USA plenty of reasons to trust her.
She played in all five games and won the tournament MVP award. Clark averaged 11.6 points and 6.4 assists per game. She also shot 52.9% from the field.
Most importantly, she led the tournament in assists.
Those numbers showed how quickly Clark can influence games. Her passing, shooting and ability to control tempo make her difficult to defend.
Therefore, whether she starts may matter less than how Lawson uses her during important moments.

Lawson is confident that Clark is ready for the World Cup. The coach has watched her closely during her outstanding WNBA campaign.
However, Lawson admitted that there is still one major unknown.
Team USA does not know exactly how international opponents will defend Clark.
WNBA teams are familiar with Clark’s strengths. They know her shooting range, passing ability and pick-and-roll tendencies. FIBA opponents may use different defensive strategies.
Some teams could pressure her immediately. Others may deny her the ball or force her away from her preferred spots.
Lawson wants to see how those strategies develop once the tournament begins.

International basketball can look different from the WNBA. Coaches often use their rotations based on matchups rather than simply selecting their five most talented players.
That could benefit Clark.
A player does not need to start to become a team’s most important offensive weapon. Clark could enter games with fresh legs and immediately increase the pace.
Her long-range shooting can also create more space for teammates. That becomes especially valuable when Team USA faces packed defenses.
If opponents focus heavily on Clark, other USA players could find easier scoring opportunities.
Clark enters the World Cup after another impressive WNBA season. She averaged 22.5 points and 8.4 assists while shooting 45.6% from the field.
Her offensive development has made her one of the most dangerous players on the Team USA roster.
Clark can score from deep, create shots for teammates and push the ball in transition. She can also change the rhythm of a game within minutes.
That versatility gives Lawson several ways to use her.
Despite the enormous attention surrounding her, Clark appears ready for the challenge.
She has described the opportunity as something special and emphasized how fortunate she feels to represent the United States.
Clark also understands that international basketball presents a new challenge. She has already played for USA Basketball at the junior level and won a FIBA U19 World Cup MVP award.
Now, she gets the opportunity to perform on the senior stage.
The biggest question may not be whether Caitlin Clark starts. Instead, it may be how quickly she adjusts to FIBA basketball.
Team USA has tremendous depth and experience. Clark does not need to carry the entire offense.
Her ability to create pace, stretch the floor and produce assists could make her a crucial part of Lawson’s rotation.
If her previous international performance is any indication, Clark can make a major impact regardless of her starting status.
As the World Cup begins, fans will be watching closely. The way international teams defend Clark could reveal just how different FIBA basketball is from the WNBA.
