Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables has confirmed that wide receiver Jayden Gibson is no longer part of the team. “Jayden’s no longer with the team,” Venables said during his weekly SEC teleconference. He did not share any further details about Gibson’s exit.
Gibson’s name was removed from the official roster soon after the announcement. The move ends his time in Norman after missing the 2024 season due to a knee injury. Gibson also did not appear in any of Oklahoma’s first six games of 2025.
Gibson’s Response and Injury Setbacks
After the news broke, Gibson thanked Oklahoma and its fans on X (formerly Twitter). He had missed the 2024 season after tearing his patellar tendon. During spring practice earlier this year, Venables said Gibson was still with the team but had suffered “a small setback.”
Those setbacks delayed his return to the field and limited his progress. Now, his removal from the roster confirms that his time with the Sooners has officially ended.

Gibson’s Breakout in 2023
Gibson’s best year came in 2023, when Oklahoma finished 10–3 and reached the Alamo Bowl. He caught 14 passes for 375 yards and five touchdowns, showing his potential as a big-play receiver.
Standing at 6-foot-5, Gibson often created mismatches on the perimeter. He scored in each of Oklahoma’s final three regular-season games that year. His first career start came in the Alamo Bowl against Arizona, where he capped off a strong season.
As a true freshman in 2022, Gibson played in nine games. He recorded one catch for 12 yards and contributed mostly on special teams.
From 4-Star Recruit to Transfer Portal Candidate
Gibson was a 4-star recruit out of West Orange High School in Florida. He was ranked among the top 200 players in the 2022 class and had offers from Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, and Miami. His height and athleticism made him one of Oklahoma’s most exciting young prospects.
According to On3’s Pete Nakos, Gibson is expected to enter the NCAA transfer portal soon. With two years of eligibility left, he will look for a fresh start. Programs in need of size and red-zone talent may show interest.
Oklahoma’s Offense Thriving Without Gibson
Even without Gibson, the Sooners’ offense has remained strong in 2025. Arkansas transfer Isaiah Sategna leads Oklahoma with 420 yards and three touchdowns. Tight end Jaren Kanak and wide receiver Deion Burks have added 348 and 339 yards, respectively.
Those numbers already surpass Oklahoma’s 2024 receiving leader, Bauer Sharp, who finished with 324 yards. The Sooners’ depth at wide receiver has helped offset Gibson’s absence.
Venables and offensive coordinator Seth Littrell have spread the ball efficiently. The offense continues to develop even as the roster changes.
