Marcus Freeman’s Rising Profile: Could the Notre Dame Head Coach Make an NFL Leap?

Marcus Freeman and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have entered the 2025 college football season with one major goal in mind: earning a spot in the College Football Playoff and competing for a national championship. After falling just short in a heartbreaking loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes last season, the program is determined to return and finish the job.

A Slow Start Turned Into a Dominant Season

The season began with frustration for Notre Dame. They struggled to find rhythm offensively, and questions began to rise about whether they could deliver on their lofty preseason expectations. Many analysts believed that their hopes of returning to the national title race may have faded early.

However, the Fighting Irish responded with determination. They improved week by week and quickly emerged as one of the most competitive programs in the nation. Their turnaround not only revived their championship aspirations, but also shifted national attention back toward their head coach.

College Programs Already Targeting Freeman

With success comes attention, and Marcus Freeman’s rapid rise has made him a highly desirable coaching candidate. Numerous major college football programs are now linked to him in the rumor mill. High-profile programs such as LSU, Penn State, and Florida have been mentioned as potential landing spots should they decide to make a change on the sidelines.

Despite those rumors, leaving Notre Dame does not appear to be appealing to Freeman at this moment. He has built a strong foundation, and his continued progress makes the program more attractive to recruits and fans alike.

Could an NFL Job Tempt Marcus Freeman?

Although Freeman may not have a desire to leave for another college program, many believe he could consider a jump to the NFL in the future. The idea has gained traction recently, especially as his name becomes more frequently mentioned by analysts and insiders.

According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, Freeman’s name is rising fast on lists of potential candidates during the upcoming NFL hiring cycle. Pelissero noted that Freeman was a fifth-round draft pick of the Chicago Bears in 2009, though he never appeared in a regular-season game. Even so, his story in professional football may not be finished.

Pelissero revealed that multiple NFL franchises, including the Chicago Bears, have expressed interest in Freeman over the last few years. He explained that the coach’s “meteoric rise” from a graduate assistant at Ohio State in 2010 to the head coach of one of college football’s most historic programs has captured the attention of league decision-makers. Pelissero also described Freeman as an “engaging presence who will win the interview — if and when he’s willing to take one.”

Proven Success at Notre Dame

Freeman became head coach in 2021 after the sudden departure of Brian Kelly, who left for LSU. Since then, he has built Notre Dame into one of the most consistent programs in the country.

He has recorded a remarkable 42–12 record, highlighted by last season’s run to the national championship game. Although they fell short, the Fighting Irish demonstrated that they belong among the elite. Their strong performance under Freeman has also had a major impact on recruiting, fan excitement, and overall program strength.

What Would Make Him Leave?

Despite the growing speculation, Freeman has not expressed a clear desire to leave Notre Dame. Most signs suggest that he remains committed to the program’s long-term future.

However, there are two scenarios that could lead to his departure:

  1. A major NFL opportunity, particularly with a franchise offering full support and control.
  2. A call from his alma mater, Ohio State, should they ever face a coaching vacancy.

Those possibilities may not be immediate. But they are realistic enough to keep fans and analysts intrigued.

NFL Teams Will Continue Calling

With Notre Dame performing at a high level and Freeman’s reputation growing, it seems inevitable that NFL teams will continue to inquire about his future. Coaching candidates with leadership qualities, recruiting success, and media presence are rare. Freeman checks all of those boxes.

If the Fighting Irish continue winning, the interest will only grow. At some point, the offer on the table may become too attractive for him to ignore.

Marcus Freeman has transformed Notre Dame into a top-tier football program. His leadership, success, and personality have made him one of the most intriguing coaches in the sport. Although his immediate focus remains on returning to the national championship game, interest from the NFL will continue to follow him. Whether he stays at Notre Dame long-term or eventually makes the leap, his coaching future is one of the most compelling storylines in college football.
