Tarik Skubal Trade Rumors: Tigers President Says No Player Is Untouchable

Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, fresh off winning back-to-back Cy Young Awards, remains one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball. Yet despite his elite status, Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris made it clear that the organization does not consider any player “untouchable” — including their superstar left-hander.

During an interview with MLB Network at the winter meetings in Orlando, Harris explained the team’s philosophy and why keeping an open mind is essential to building a long-term contender.

Tigers Leadership Stresses Flexibility in Trade Decisions

“I don’t believe in untouchable players at any level,” Harris said. According to him, the stance is not a reflection on Skubal specifically but part of a wider organizational approach. “My job is to make this organization better … which means that I need to listen to every opportunity, no matter how likely or unlikely it is to actually happen.”

Harris noted that Detroit’s recent success stems from this mindset. “We don’t have everything figured out, but it’s led to a ton of success in a very short period of time. We have both a bright present and a bright future, and this approach has helped us get there.”

His comments immediately sparked discussions around Tarik Skubal trade rumors, especially as he approaches his final season before free agency.

Skubal Nearing Free Agency Increases Trade Speculation

Skubal has only one year of team control remaining. If the Tigers cannot agree to a contract extension, trade speculation will intensify. This challenge becomes more complicated because his agent, Scott Boras, typically encourages clients to test free agency rather than sign extensions close to contract expiration.

Even so, Harris avoided engaging in public speculation.

“I can’t, and I won’t, speculate on trades for our own players,” he said. “It’s not fair to the players or the teams involved.” He added that the Tigers have an entire roster working toward the postseason, emphasizing that the organization’s philosophy requires contributions from everyone.

Still, one thing is clear: “Tarik’s a Tiger right now. We’re thrilled he’s a Tiger,” Harris said. “He’s a huge part of what we’re doing.”

Skubal’s Historic Dominance Strengthens His Value

Tarik Skubal’s resume explains why his potential availability draws massive league-wide attention. In 2024, he finished 13-6 with a 2.21 ERA and 241 strikeouts over 195⅓ innings. He led the American League in multiple categories, including:

  • ERA
  • Strikeout rate (32.2%)
  • Walk rate (4.4%)
  • OBP allowed (.240)
  • OPS allowed (.559)
  • Baseball-Reference WAR (6.5)
  • FanGraphs WAR (6.6)

These numbers helped him become the first pitcher to win consecutive Cy Young Awards since Jacob deGrom (2018–19) and the first AL pitcher to do it since Pedro Martinez (1999–2000).

Elite Pitch Arsenal Drives Skubal’s Success

Skubal’s success stems from a dominant arsenal. His fastball averaged nearly 98 mph, giving him one of the hardest-thrown four-seamers among starting pitchers. His devastating changeup — one of baseball’s most effective — held opponents to a .154 batting average and accounted for 110 strikeouts.

Moreover, he did not allow a run in 12 of 31 starts, marking the most scoreless starts of six or more innings in Tigers history and the most in MLB since Adam Wainwright in 2014.

Two-Year Stretch That Places Him Among the Best in Baseball

Over the past two seasons, Skubal has been nearly unmatched. He ranks:

  • 1st in MLB in strikeouts (469)
  • 1st in WHIP (0.91)
  • 2nd in ERA (2.30)
  • 2nd in innings pitched (387⅓)
  • 2nd in opponent OPS (.558)

His consistent performance helped Detroit reach the postseason each of the last two years, although both runs ended in Game 5 of the AL Division Series.

Tigers Confident in Their Future With or Without a Trade

Harris concluded by reinforcing that the Tigers are building a strong, sustainable roster. “We have a really good team that we’re going to put on the field,” he said. “Tarik is a big part of that, but there are many talented players in this organization who are helping us win.”

As the offseason continues, Tarik Skubal trade rumors will remain a major storyline. Whether the Tigers ultimately explore a blockbuster deal or pursue an extension, Skubal’s value has never been higher — and his future remains one of the most compelling questions of the MLB winter.
