Northwestern Hires Chip Kelly as Offensive Coordinator in Program-Defining Move

Northwestern has officially hired veteran coach Chip Kelly as its new offensive coordinator. The school announced the move on Tuesday, marking one of the most significant staff changes in recent program history. Kelly joins head coach David Braun as the Wildcats prepare for a new era, highlighted by the opening of the $850 million Ryan Field next season.

Chip Kelly’s Extensive Coaching Resume

Chip Kelly brings decades of experience at both the college and professional levels. He has served as a head coach at Oregon and UCLA, and also coached in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers. In addition, he has worked as an offensive coordinator at New Hampshire, Oregon, Ohio State, and most recently, the Las Vegas Raiders.

Recent Stint in the NFL Ends Abruptly

Kelly spent the 2025 season as the offensive coordinator for the Raiders. However, the experiment ended early. Las Vegas fired Kelly on Nov. 23 after a disappointing 2–9 start. Despite that setback, his return to college football came quickly, as several programs showed interest in his offensive expertise.

National Championship Success at Ohio State

Before his time in Las Vegas, Kelly enjoyed tremendous success at Ohio State. Serving as offensive coordinator in 2024, he helped guide the Buckeyes to a national championship. Ohio State finished that season with the nation’s No. 14 scoring offense. His aggressive late-game playcalling, including a decisive deep pass against Notre Dame, stood out throughout the playoff run.

Why Northwestern Targeted Kelly

Northwestern struggled offensively last season. The Wildcats ranked No. 96 nationally in both total offense and scoring offense. They also finished 15th in the Big Ten in points per game, averaging 22.5 points. The program sought a coach who could adapt schemes to available personnel. Kelly’s flexibility and experience made him an ideal fit.

David Braun Emphasizes Long-Term Vision

Head coach David Braun praised Kelly’s innovative approach. He highlighted Kelly’s focus on tempo, efficiency, and smart decision-making. Braun also pointed to Kelly’s history of quarterback development and talent maximization. Braun described the hire as a “program-defining change”, reinforcing Northwestern’s commitment to championship aspirations.

Kelly’s Offensive Philosophy and Fit

Kelly’s offenses have evolved over time. At Oregon, his teams changed college football with fast tempo and explosive plays. At UCLA, he relied more on balance and physical rushing attacks. His Bruins teams led the Pac-12 in scoring and averaged over 500 yards per game in 2022. Northwestern expects a style closer to his UCLA approach rather than Oregon’s breakneck pace.

Transfer Portal Timing Matters

Braun secured Kelly before the transfer portal window opens on Jan. 2, which is critical. The timing allows Northwestern to reshape its roster quickly. Kelly has a strong track record of using the portal to bring in veteran players. Quarterback play will remain central to his system, especially with Preston Stone returning after a strong bowl performance.

Building Momentum Under Braun

Braun has compiled a 19–19 record over three seasons at Northwestern. He also earned two bowl victories, including a dominant 34–7 win over Central Michigan in the GameAbove Sports Bowl. Kelly’s arrival strengthens Braun’s staff and raises expectations moving forward.

A New Era Begins at Ryan Field

Northwestern will open its new state-of-the-art stadium next season. The administration believes Kelly can help energize the program on and off the field. With proven success across multiple levels of football, Kelly now has a chance to reshape the Wildcats’ offense and guide the program into its next chapter.

  1. […] Nottingham Forest currently sit 17th in the Premier League table and remain under pressure to move away from the relegation zone. Everton, placed 12th, arrive with relatively more stability but still seek consistency. Both teams have already faced each other once this season, adding an extra tactical edge to this fixture. Forest will rely heavily on home support, while Everton will aim to control the tempo and exploit defensive gaps.Read more >> Northwestern Hires Chip Kelly as Offensive Coordinator in Program-Defining Move […]
