Defending champion Ilia Malinin delivered an outstanding performance to lead the men’s competition after the short program at the World Figure Skating Championships in Prague.

French skater Adam Siao Him Fa secured second place with a strong score of 101.85. His routine included a perfectly executed quad toe loop–triple toe loop combination, followed by a powerful quad salchow.

Estonian athlete Aleksandr Selevko surprised many spectators by placing third with a personal-best score of 96.49.

Japanese skater Shun Sato finished fourth, while his countryman Yuma Kagiyama, a two-time Olympic silver medalist, struggled after falling during a lutz attempt and ended in sixth place.

American skaters Andrew Torgashev and Jacob Sanchez placed seventh and tenth, respectively, with Sanchez making his senior World Championships debut.

Malinin acknowledged that the Olympic experience was mentally challenging. He admitted that coping with pressure at his first Olympic Games was difficult and that he spent days reflecting on what went wrong.

“There are always small things that can change the outcome of any performance,” he explained.

However, he eventually decided to move forward and focus on future competitions rather than dwelling on past mistakes. This mindset shift appears to have paid off, as demonstrated by his record-setting short program.

Meanwhile, Olympic champion Mikhail Shaidorov is not participating in the World Championships, leaving the competition more open for other top contenders.

With a lead of more than nine points, Malinin enters the free skate as the clear favorite to win his third consecutive world title. His consistency and technical strength give him a significant advantage over competitors.
