Dodgers trade for Alek Thomas

The Los Angeles Dodgers officially acquired center fielder Alek Thomas from the Arizona Diamondbacks in a move that strengthens their outfield depth for the 2026 MLB season.

Arizona received minor league outfielder Jose Requena in return. The Dodgers also designated Michael Siani for assignment to open a roster spot.

Dodgers Take Chance on Former Top Prospect

The Dodgers see Thomas as a low-risk player with strong upside. Arizona selected him in the second round of the MLB Draft, and scouts once ranked him among baseball’s top prospects.

Thomas impressed throughout the minor leagues. He showed speed, athleticism, and solid hitting ability at every level. However, he has struggled to produce consistent offense in Major League Baseball.

Over four-plus MLB seasons, Thomas owns a .230 batting average with a .273 on-base percentage and a .361 slugging percentage. He has recorded those numbers across nearly 1,500 plate appearances.

Even with those struggles, Los Angeles believes Thomas still offers value. The team hopes its coaching staff can help him improve his approach at the plate.

Diamondbacks Create Room for Young Talent

Arizona moved Thomas after promoting top prospect Ryan Waldschmidt to the major leagues. The organization wanted more opportunities for younger outfield talent.

The Diamondbacks already feature stars like Corbin Carroll and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in the outfield. Prospect Jorge Barrosa also continues to compete for playing time.

Arizona had explored trade possibilities involving Thomas for several seasons. The team also traded Jake McCarthy to the Colorado Rockies during the offseason.

Defense Remains Thomas’ Biggest Strength

Thomas still provides excellent defense in center field. Many scouts consider him an above-average defender because of his speed, range, and instincts.

His offense remains the main concern. Thomas swings aggressively and often chases pitches outside the strike zone. He especially struggles against off-speed pitches.

That aggressive style has hurt his walk rate and on-base percentage. Still, the Dodgers believe they can help him make adjustments.

Los Angeles has helped several players revive their careers in recent years. The organization hopes Thomas can become another success story.

Possible Role in Los Angeles

Thomas still has one minor league option remaining. Because of that flexibility, the Dodgers could start him in Triple-A before promoting him later this season.

At the MLB level, Los Angeles lacks a true backup center fielder behind Andy Pages. Players like Alex Call, Santiago Espinal, and Miguel Rojas offer versatility, but none specializes in center field defense.

The Dodgers also expect Kiké Hernández to return from the injured list soon. Even so, Thomas gives the roster another athletic outfield option.

Trade Could Pay Off for Dodgers

The Dodgers will pay the remaining $1.4 million on Thomas’ arbitration salary. That cost creates little financial risk for the franchise.

If Thomas improves offensively, this trade could become an important addition for Los Angeles. His defensive ability and athletic tools still make him an intriguing player.

For now, the Dodgers gain valuable depth while taking a chance on a former top prospect with untapped potential.
