Rory McIlroy Struggles as PGA Championship Round Leaderboard

The opening round of the 108th PGA Championship delivered drama, shifting momentum, and difficult scoring conditions at Aronimink Golf Club. Windy weather and demanding pin placements tested many of the world’s best golfers during a challenging first day of action.

Former major champion Martin Kaymer produced one of the steadiest rounds of the day. Kaymer reached three under par during his opening round and showed excellent touch around the greens. His long-distance par save on the 13th hole highlighted his composure under pressure.

Justin Thomas also impressed during the first round. Thomas climbed to three under after a calm birdie on the eighth hole. He maintained control throughout his round despite the difficult wind conditions at Aronimink.

Rory McIlroy Suffers Frustrating Start

The biggest surprise of the day came from Rory McIlroy. The five-time major champion finished with a disappointing four-over 74 after struggling badly off the tee.

McIlroy missed nine fairways during his opening round. His driving problems became worse during the closing stretch as he finished with four consecutive bogeys. It marked the first time in his major championship career that he ended a round with four straight bogeys.

After the round, McIlroy openly criticized his own performance. He admitted that inconsistent driving has troubled him throughout the season. Although he still ranks among the PGA Tour leaders in driving distance, accuracy continues to create problems.

McIlroy explained that he often misses shots both right and left when trying to correct his swing. He also admitted that windy conditions at Aronimink made the course far more difficult than he expected earlier in the week.

The Northern Irish star entered the tournament with confidence after recent improvements in practice sessions. However, tournament pressure once again affected his ball striking when competition began.

Scottie Scheffler managed to stay close to the leaders despite facing trouble on several holes. Scheffler saved an important par from the bunker on the challenging 245-yard eighth hole to remain within striking distance.

Jon Rahm also battled through difficult moments during his round. Rahm later apologized after accidentally hitting a volunteer with a divot during a moment of frustration. Despite the incident, he recovered well enough to post a one-under 69.

Meanwhile, Shane Lowry produced one of the highlights of the day with a spectacular chip-in eagle on the ninth hole. His excellent short game helped him return to under par after earlier mistakes.

Strong Performances from International Players

Several international golfers positioned themselves well after round one. Aaron Rai continued his strong recent form by reaching two under par with back-to-back birdies.

Scottish golfer Robert MacIntyre also finished strongly on the front nine with birdies that moved him into red figures.

Veteran European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald once again demonstrated his experience by battling through difficult conditions to stay under par.
