Manchester United have completed the signing of Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea in a deal worth an initial £48 million, marking one of the club’s biggest moves of the summer transfer window. The 22-year-old arrives at Old Trafford on a contract running until June 2031, with the option of an additional year.
The transfer signals Manchester United’s determination to strengthen the heart of the team under new head coach Michael Carrick. While United have secured one of their primary midfield targets, their pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Éderson has stalled, leaving the club to explore other options, including Aston Villa’s Youri Tielemans.
Manchester United identified Santos as one of their priority targets after missing out on several midfield options earlier in the transfer window. The Brazilian’s combination of technical ability, defensive awareness, and progressive passing made him an ideal fit for Carrick’s tactical approach.
Santos enjoyed an impressive campaign with Chelsea last season. He made 43 appearances across competitions and produced some of the Premier League’s best passing statistics among midfielders under the age of 22. His excellent pass completion rate and ability to move the ball forward consistently highlighted his growing influence in midfield.
Before establishing himself at Chelsea, Santos spent a successful loan spell at Strasbourg. He captained the French side on several occasions while contributing 11 goals and five assists, demonstrating both leadership qualities and attacking impact.
After completing the move, Santos expressed his excitement about joining one of football’s biggest clubs.
He described Manchester United as a special club with a rich history and admitted that several of his football idols once played at Old Trafford. The Brazilian also revealed that working under Michael Carrick played a significant role in his decision.
Santos believes Carrick’s experience as one of England’s finest midfielders will help him continue his development. He also praised the ambition inside the club and said he cannot wait to compete for major trophies alongside his new teammates.

Director of football Jason Wilcox welcomed the signing and praised Santos’ complete midfield skill set.
According to Wilcox, Santos offers excellent technical quality while contributing at both ends of the pitch. He described the Brazilian as a key recruitment target and believes the midfielder still has enormous room for growth despite already gaining valuable experience in top-level football.
United also value Santos’ leadership qualities. He has captained Brazil at Under-23 level and has shown maturity beyond his age throughout his professional career.
While Manchester United celebrated Santos’ arrival, another midfield move has been put on hold.
United had previously agreed a deal worth around £35 million with Atalanta for Brazilian midfielder Éderson. However, reports indicate the transfer stopped after medical examinations revealed an injury-related concern.
Club officials have not ruled out revisiting the transfer later in the summer. However, the current agreement is no longer progressing, and United are focusing on alternative options.
Importantly, the decision to sign Santos was independent of the Éderson situation. Manchester United had already identified Santos as a priority addition before complications emerged.

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild may not be finished.
The club is now in advanced discussions to sign Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. Reports suggest the Belgian international has a release clause that could simplify negotiations, while the player is interested in making the move to Old Trafford.
If completed, Tielemans would bring significant Premier League experience, creativity, and composure to Carrick’s squad. His arrival alongside Santos would provide United with greater depth following recent midfield departures and injuries.
Santos is regarded as a modern box-to-box midfielder who combines defensive discipline with intelligent distribution. He progresses possession efficiently, wins duels, and contributes in attacking areas when opportunities arise.
His versatility allows him to operate as a holding midfielder or in a more advanced central role. Those qualities should fit well into Carrick’s possession-based style while adding energy and balance to United’s midfield.
With pre-season already underway, Santos is expected to integrate quickly and could make his unofficial debut in Manchester United’s upcoming friendly fixtures.
The signing of Andrey Santos represents a significant investment in Manchester United’s future. At just 22 years old, the Brazilian already possesses valuable top-level experience, leadership qualities, and impressive technical ability.
Although the Éderson deal has stalled, United remain active in the transfer market and continue to pursue additional reinforcements. If the club also secures Youri Tielemans, Michael Carrick could enter the new Premier League season with a completely revitalized midfield capable of competing at the highest level.
