Indiana Fever WNBA playoffs

Indiana Fever Playoff Spot Secured as Title Odds Fall

The Indiana Fever have officially secured a place in the 2026 WNBA playoffs. The achievement marks their third straight postseason appearance. However, their chances of winning the WNBA Finals have recently dropped, according to Opta’s supercomputer.

Indiana currently sits fourth in the WNBA standings with a 24-13 record. The team secured its playoff berth without playing on Friday. A Portland loss to Toronto confirmed Indiana’s postseason place.

The Fever now have their sights set on a deep playoff run. Yet, recent results have caused Opta to lower its projection for their championship chances.

Indiana Fever Clinch Third Straight Playoff Spot

The Fever’s playoff qualification represents a major turnaround for the franchise.

Indiana missed the playoffs for seven consecutive seasons from 2017 through 2023. The team has since become a consistent postseason contender.

The arrival of Aliyah Boston and Caitlin Clark played a major role in that transformation. Both players became key pieces of the Fever’s new era. Kelsey Mitchell has also developed into one of the team’s most important scorers.

Indiana’s 24-13 record currently puts the team fourth in the standings. The Fever are also only half a game behind the Las Vegas Aces.

That position could give Indiana home-court advantage in the opening playoff round. The team will now look to strengthen its position during the remaining regular-season games.

Opta Lowers Indiana’s Championship Chances

Although the Fever have reached the playoffs, their championship outlook has become less optimistic.

Opta previously gave Indiana a 17.8% chance of winning the 2026 WNBA Finals. That projection came just over a week ago.

The latest prediction has reduced Indiana’s chances to 12.0%.

The decline follows a difficult stretch that included a loss to the Dallas Wings. While one defeat does not define a season, the result affected the supercomputer’s latest calculations.

Opta’s model currently places Indiana behind several other championship contenders. The Minnesota Lynx lead the predictions with a 33.6% chance of winning the title.

The Golden State Valkyries rank second at 19.8%. The Atlanta Dream follow at 14.0%. Indiana sits fourth in the championship probability rankings.

Interestingly, the Las Vegas Aces have only an 8.4% chance according to the same model. This shows how regular-season standings and statistical championship projections can tell different stories.

Fever Face Important Games Ahead

Indiana still has plenty of time to improve its position before the playoffs begin.

The Fever are scheduled to face the New York Liberty and Chicago Sky on consecutive days. They will then meet the Connecticut Sun on August 28.

After the league’s break for the FIBA World Cup, Indiana will return for four more regular-season games.

These games could have a major impact on the Fever’s playoff position. A strong finish could improve their seeding and potentially increase their championship outlook.

The regular season ends on September 24. The WNBA playoffs are scheduled to begin on September 27.

Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston Key to Indiana’s Run

Caitlin Clark remains one of the biggest names surrounding the Fever. Her presence has helped transform expectations around the franchise.

Aliyah Boston also continues to provide an important presence on both ends of the court. Together with Mitchell and the rest of the roster, they give Indiana a strong foundation for the postseason.

The Fever now face a different challenge. Reaching the playoffs has become expected. The next goal is advancing deep into the postseason.

Indiana last reached the WNBA Finals in 2015. The Fever lost that series 3-2 to the Minnesota Lynx. Their most recent championship came in 2012, when they defeated Minnesota 3-1.

Can Indiana Fever Win the 2026 WNBA Championship?

Opta’s 12.0% projection suggests that Indiana faces a difficult path to the championship. However, statistical models cannot determine what will happen in a playoff series.

The Fever have already proved that they can compete with the league’s best teams. Their fourth-place standing gives them a strong starting point.

Now, Indiana must finish the regular season well and carry that momentum into the playoffs.

The championship odds may have declined, but the Fever’s postseason opportunity remains very real. With Clark, Boston, Mitchell and a talented supporting cast, Indiana could still surprise the WNBA when the playoffs begin.
