Browns Fans Have Lost Patience With Watson

Watson’s return to Cleveland’s lineup was always going to attract attention. Instead of receiving strong support, he was met with loud boos from the home crowd.

After the game, Watson argued that the reaction was personal. He also criticized the fans for their response. That comment quickly became part of the wider discussion about his future.

Former NFL star Chad Johnson offered a different perspective. He pointed to quarterbacks such as Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold. Both players faced heavy criticism from their own supporters before rebuilding their careers elsewhere.

Johnson’s message was simple. Watson cannot control the crowd. He can control his performance.

That may be the most important lesson for the Browns quarterback. Strong play could change the conversation. Another poor season could make his position even harder to defend.

Watson’s Performance Remains a Major Concern

The financial commitment to Watson makes the situation especially complicated. Cleveland gave him a fully guaranteed $230 million contract in 2022. The Browns also surrendered multiple draft picks to acquire him from the Houston Texans.

The return on that investment has been disappointing.

According to the figures cited in the recent reports, Watson is 9-10 as a Browns starter. He has thrown 19 touchdown passes against 12 interceptions during those 19 starts.

Injuries have also limited his availability. His Achilles injury in 2024 created another major setback.

For a quarterback carrying such a massive contract, Cleveland needs much more than occasional flashes. The team needs consistent production, leadership and availability.

The Browns Face a Difficult Financial Decision

Cutting Watson would not be an easy solution.

Reports indicate that releasing him before the 2026 season would create approximately $127 million in dead salary-cap charges. Around $41 million would count against the 2026 cap, with another $86 million affecting 2027.

That financial burden explains why the Browns cannot simply erase the problem overnight.

However, keeping a player only because of money can create another problem. The Browns must decide whether Watson gives them the best chance to compete or whether they should begin building around another quarterback.

That decision could shape the franchise for years.

Shedeur Sanders Adds Another Option

Shedeur Sanders is also part of the Browns’ quarterback conversation. The second-year quarterback has struggled statistically, so replacing Watson with Sanders would not guarantee immediate improvement.

Still, Sanders represents a different direction.

At 24, he has more potential time to develop. Cleveland could use the remainder of the season to evaluate whether he can become part of its long-term plans.

The Browns also appear positioned to consider another quarterback in the 2027 NFL Draft. That makes the 2026 season even more important for the franchise’s rebuilding strategy.

What Should Cleveland Do With Deshaun Watson?

The Browns have two difficult choices.

They can continue with Watson and hope better health and stronger performances change the narrative. Or they can accept the financial consequences and move toward a different quarterback.

From a football perspective, the argument for moving on is becoming stronger. Cleveland needs stability at its most important position. The current relationship between Watson and the fan base appears deeply damaged.

Watson can still change that perception, but only his play can do it.
