South African football has been left heartbroken following the death of Jayden Adams, the talented Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder, who passed away at the age of 25. According to the Western Cape South African Police Service, officers registered an inquest after the body of a 25-year-old man was discovered at a property on Military Road in Schotschekloof, Cape Town. Officials stated that the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
Jayden Adams Played a Key Role at the FIFA World Cup 2026
Jayden Adams was part of South Africa’s historic FIFA World Cup squad that reached the Round of 32 for the first time. The midfielder started two of Bafana Bafana’s three group-stage matches, showing composure and determination on football’s biggest stage.
He featured in the opening 2-0 defeat to Mexico before starting the 1-1 draw against Czechia. Remarkably, Adams played that match despite learning of the death of his grandmother, Marianna Adams, only a day earlier. His professionalism and commitment earned widespread admiration.
Adams later came off the bench during South Africa’s crucial 1-0 victory over South Korea on June 24. That victory secured the nation’s place in the knockout rounds and became the final competitive appearance of his promising career.

Football Community Pays Tribute
The South African Football Players Union described Adams’ passing as an immeasurable loss for South African football.
In its statement, SAFPU praised the midfielder for representing his country with pride, courage, and distinction during the FIFA World Cup. The union extended heartfelt condolences to his family, teammates, former clubs, and supporters, remembering him as a gifted footballer whose career still had enormous potential.
Mamelodi Sundowns also expressed deep sorrow, describing Adams as a highly talented midfielder and an important member of both the club and the national team.
The club offered condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and supporters while requesting privacy for those grieving the devastating loss.
Minister and FIFA President Honor Adams
South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts & Culture, Gayton McKenzie, shared an emotional tribute, recalling a recent conversation with Adams after the player experienced a personal family tragedy.
McKenzie praised the midfielder’s humility, professionalism, and willingness to continue representing South Africa despite difficult personal circumstances.
